When Fair Isn’t Fair Enough


MULTIPLE WNBA PLAYERS, including several on our Indiana Fever, are at least passively in sympathy with star forward Angel Reese in her conviction to “sit out” if demands for higher pay are not met.

Well, why not? They play the same game on the same sized court. The hoop is set at exactly the same 10 feet. They run up and down the court only a few times less per game dibbling only a slightly smaller ball. They sweat the same, sort of.

Does it matter that so few watch their games that the league loses $15 million a year, a sum that must be made up ultimately in one way or another by NBA fans, the great number of whom have little or no interest in women’s basketball?

No, fair is fair.

And while we’re at it, let’s pay all women the same on average as all men in all jobs, even the dangerous, physically taxing ones in which they typically underperform and for which they rarely apply. But yes, let’s lower standards for combat infantry so women get a fair shot at those high-paying billets even if that means lower-caliber rifles and grenades with smaller blast zones.

Do insurance companies adjust premiums for disparity between adult men and women in accidents per miles driven? I think they do.

Whatever, let’s calculate average fairness to include lower lifetime earnings of women who voluntarily — and nobly, to my mind — interrupt their careers at critical stages to raise children and build a home. And let’s reserve slots in professional schools for women, ignoring that they on average limit or even curtail their practices early, aggravating any shortage of doctors, veterinarians, etc.

And what about k-12 teachers so intent on women’s studies, ethnic cultural history and such that they push degrees that leave his/her/them in a parent’s basement planning street riots? Let’s pay them the same as teachers of STEM skills graduating physicians, engineers and physicists.

Wait, what? We do pay them the same?
